Cherokee targets wanted immigrants

Cherokee County Sheriff's deputies arrested eight people this week in a sting to capture foreign-born individuals who had outstanding arrest warrants.

The county teamed up with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to arrest the suspects Tuesday.

One was taken to the Cherokee Adult Detention Center and held without bond, and the others were taken to the Whitfield County jail, where they will remain until they are deported, authorities said.

"The Cherokee Sheriff's Office will continue to work closely with ICE to aggressively locate and apprehend foreign-born individuals who violate local, state and federal laws," Sheriff Roger Garrison said.
