The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to buy 37 acres for a new aquatic center.

Adding an aquatic center equipped for competitive swimming and recreation to the county park system has been on the to-do list for the commissioners for years. The land is on the southwest corner of I-575 and Sixes Road and borders the Little River. The cost of the land was about $1.7 million.

Commissioner Harry Johnston said plans for the center are still being developed and estimates are that it will cost $10- to $15 million to build. It could have as many as three pool areas, two of them enclosed for year-round use.

"Whether we can afford all that is undecided at this point," Johnston said.
