A judge reduced the charges for a mother arrested for letting her 3-year-old son wander alone in southwest Atlanta.

Suzette Young, 28, was charged with cruelty to children, a felony, on Monday after neighbors found her son walking alone on Butner Road.

On Tuesday, a judge reduced Young’s charge to reckless conduct, a misdemeanor. The judge also agreed to release Young from the Fulton County jail on a signature bond, said Tracy Flanagan, spokeswoman for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.

Young told officers she dropped her son off at his father’s house on Butner Road around 11 a.m. Monday, Atlanta Police spokesman Officer Eric Schwartz said.

“The child never made it in the house safely,” Schwartz said.

Officers returned the boy to his father. The child was not injured, Schwartz said.

Young is scheduled to appear in State Court on July 21.

The judge’s ruling allows Young to be released from jail without any cash. However, if she does not follow the judge’s requirements, including showing up for court dates, she could return to jail, Flanagan said.
