Shoppers headed to metro Atlanta malls on the last weekend before Christmas could face a little wintry precipitation as forecasters are predicting a chance of snow on Saturday and Sunday.

"Rain and snow potential will be determined by how cold it actually does get and if there is enough moisture," the National Weather Service said in a statement early Thursday.

In the northeast corner of the state, forecasters are predicting the possibility of 1 to 3 inches of snow beginning on Friday.

The forecast for metro Atlanta calls for an 80 percent chance of rain Thursday night, with lows in the upper 30s.

The chance of rain goes up to 100 percent on Friday, when highs will only be around 40 degrees. The day will be breezy, with winds of 15 to 25 mph.

A 50 percent chance of rain and lows in the mid-30s are predicted for Friday night.

Saturday will be cloudy, with a 30 percent chance of showers or snow showers and highs in the upper 50s.

Mostly cloudy skies are forecast for Saturday night, along with a 20 percent chance of snow showers and lows in the low 30s.

Sunday will be partly sunny, with a chance of flurries and highs in the upper 40s, the Weather Service said.

South of Atlanta, a flood watch has been posted for late Thursday night through Friday evening along and south of a line from Muscogee to Warren counties, where forecasters are predicting about 2 inches of rain from a weather system expected to track across south Georgia or north Florida. In metro Atlanta, about an inch of rain is expected.
