UPDATE: Due to rain expected on Saturday, the grand opening of the Waterworks Greenspace has been moved to Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m.

ORIGINAL: A celebration will be held this weekend for the opening of a new park in northwest Atlanta.

The 4.5-acre Waterworks Greenspace is the first phase of an effort to create more parks with walking trails and benches around the city’s water facility on the corner of Northside Drive and 17th Street.

The Friends of Atlanta Waterworks, the Upper Westside Improvement District and the Department of Watershed Management cleared out overgrowth to reopen the new area, a press release said.

Scooping up greenspace is important for residents as development booms in the area. A few projects in the works include a massive 70-acre mixed-use property near the future Westside Park, a 20-story glass and concrete high-rise building, a mixed-use development at the 14th Street and Howell Mill Road intersection and a new apartment complex with direct pedestrian access to the popular Westside Provisions District.

A ribbon cutting will be held for the new park at 3 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a community celebration with free food and beverages available from local businesses. See more information here.

Donald Trump's administration deployed the military to Washington, D.C., in the name of fighting crime, and in an Aug. 11 news conference he mentioned the possibility of military being sent to other large American cities, all of which are led by Black, Democratic mayors. And while Atlanta wasn't included in Trump's list, the city fits that profile under Mayor Andre Dickens. (Photo Illustration: Philip Robibero / AJC | Source: Getty)
