Carrie Butler was sound asleep in her bed at her apartment in College Park when the ceiling came crashing down on her Wednesday.

"The Sheetrock and insulation -- all that came down on me. I mean the whole ceiling fell, " Butler, 68,  told the AJC Thursday following her release from Atlanta Medical Center, where she was taken for head and neck injuries she suffered when the ceiling collapsed at the Vesta Gardens apartments on Washington Road.

Her son, J.C. Butler, said he was cleaning the bathroom when he heard ‘boom, boom, boom, boom' coming from his mother's room. He found her buried in the Sheetrock and she wasn't moving, he said. Butler ran to his neighbor and called for help. Carrie Butler was transported to Atlanta Medical Center.

Carrie Butler said she had lived at the apartment for two years and had had only a minor problem with a leak in the kitchen ceiling, which management fixed, she said. The Butlers say they hope maintenance workers will repair the ceiling Thursday so that Carrie Butler won't have to spend another uncomfortable night sleeping on a small sofa in the living room.
