The WSB Care-A-Thon, a fundraiser for cancer-afflicted children, raised $1,284,549 in this year's 11th-annual event.

For 37 continuous hours, WSB radio personalities pushed aside talk about politics and the economy to concentrate on a charitable cause, broadcasting live from the Aflac Cancer Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The 11th annual event ended at 6 p.m. Friday.

“Not only do we raise money, but we tell the stories of children dealing with cancer,” said Pete Spriggs, program director for AM 750 and 95.5 FM News/Talk WSB. “The cancer center really is a gem here for the city of Atlanta and Georgia.”

Money expert Dave Ramsey and fellow finance guru Clark Howard participated in the event, which has raised more than $10 million since its inception. On their respective talk shows, Ramsey and Howard will take phone calls from listeners and dispense financial advice, while encouraging donations even in a tough economy.

“There’s something that happens when you engage in the act of giving,” Ramsey said. “You’re spreading some hope.”

Donations can still be made for the next week on the WSB radio website. Donations of any amount are welcome, said Condace Pressley, assistant program director for the radio station.

“The children don’t get that the economy is bad; all they want to do is get well,” Pressley said. “All we want to do is help them get well.”
