A Canton man is in jail after police say he broke into an apartment and raped his estranged girlfriend.

Investigators said Eric Nathan Coleman, 29, had made a copy of a key to the Canton Mills Lofts apartments where the victim’s relatives lived.

On Wednesday, the victim told police she awoke and found Coleman inside the apartment, Canton Police Detective G. Alan Rivas said.

The woman called a relative, who asked an employee at the apartment leasing office to check on her. The employee called police after sensing something was wrong, Rivas said.

Officers investigated and learned that Coleman had raped and assaulted the woman, Rivas said.

Coleman is being held in the Cherokee County jail without bond. He is charged with rape, burglary, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, sexual battery, battery and stalking.
