A 67-year-old Canton man died after his car apparently failed to navigate a curve and crashed into a rock cliff early Thursday morning in Cherokee County, authorities said.

Ron Shelinburger was alone in his vehicle when it ran off Reinhardt College Parkway near the Bartow County line, according to Lt. Howard J. Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Speed appears to have been a factor in the accident, Baker said. No other vehicles were involved.

The Sheriff's Office received a call about the wreck about 4 a.m. Shelinburger was taken to Northside Cherokee Hospital, where Cherokee County Corner Earl Darby pronounced the motorist dead of his injuries.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the crash.
