An Atlanta cab driver was attacked early Saturday after a fare allegedly stole his city-issued permit and beat him on the way to the Georgia Tech campus.

Atlanta police said the cab driver had stopped around 1 a.m. at a Chevron gas station on Spring Street on the way to taking a man and woman to  Tech’s campus. The cab driver had picked the couple up at a Buckhead club called Ivy, police said.

The cab driver told police the male customer grabbed his taxi permit as he was leaving the cab at the gas station. The driver got out of the cab to confront the couple about taking the permit and about not paying the fare, a police spokesman said.

“At that time the male suspect struck the taxi driver several times causing injuries to his face,” said police spokesman Sgt. John Chafee. “The suspects then ran and were last seen getting onto the Georgia Tech bus line called the Stingerette.”

According to Tech’s website, the Stingerette provides after-hours transportation for students and employees.

The police spokesman said it did not appear the suspects identified themselves to the cab driver as Tech students. Police also did not provide the cab driver’s name or the name of the cab company.
