A Savannah businessman is charged with firing gunshots into the sport-utility vehicle of a vacationing family from Kennesaw, Channel 2 Action News reports.
Thurman Lee Howard, 53, was arrested Monday and charged with multiple counts, including aggravated assault, reckless conduct, reckless driving, aggressive driving and cruelty to children, police said.
Port Wentworth police said the incident happened the afternoon of July 25. An SUV was traveling south in the center lane of I-95, with the father driving and mother and three young children inside, when a black Audi convertible pulled up on the left.
The Audi’s driver produced a black semi-automatic pistol and started shooting out of his passenger-side window, according to a police report. Police did not say what led to the attack.
Five shots struck the family’s vehicle, including one that shattered the driver’s side window, police said. The father sustained cuts and scrapes to his left forearm from flying glass. No one else was hurt.
Port Wentworth Detective Steven Holmes said the suspect sped away, but police tracked down his car using a partial tag number.
Howard, co-owner of a local trucking company, was being held without bond Thursday in the Chatham County Jail, according to a Chatham Sheriff's Office website.
Howard's attorney, Tom Withers, declined to comment to the Associated Press.
Contacted by phone Thursday evening, the Kennesaw father also declined to comment. He said his family is still traumatized by the incident and asked that their names not be used.
