Buford Highway reopens after damage repaired
State Department of Transportation workers have reopened a damaged area of Buford Highway in Gwinnett County. Police removed the barricades blocking access to the road at 10:53 a.m. The road had been closed all morning.
Spokeswoman Teri Pope said the combination of rain and heat had cause this "very unusual occurance," slabs of concrete shifting and raising about two feet.
"This is an old state route and it was built with concrete," Pope said. "This concrete has been expanding, expanding, expanding from all the water [rain] in the area and the heat."
Police reported the problem just before midnight, Pope said.
The road was closed and traffic was diverted onto South Scales Road, Old Peachtree Road and either Sugarloaf Parkway or Interstate 85.
