A key highway around the south end of Lake Lanier will be closed for road repairs during the day Tuesday, May 8, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced.

Buford Dam Road will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Corps said on its Facebook page. Signs will be posted to alert motorists.

The Corps said the closure likely will be from the Sawnee Campground to the Project Office and Buford Dam Park.

Responding to a reader’s inquiry why the work couldn’t be done at night, the Corps said, “Due to our contract, the cost to have the work done at night would be significantly higher than during the day due to both the additional equipment needed such as lighting and paying premium for night hours.”

“While the disturbance to traffic may be less at night, we consider major traffic flow and try to get the work done between the rush hours.”
