A brush fire near the Buford City Hall that scorched about 100 acres of a grassy field Saturday afternoon was still smoldering Sunday evening.
The Gwinnett County Fire Department warned people with severe respiratory problems to avoid lingering in the area because of the haze that has settled close to the ground.
The smoke is coming from smoldering mulch piles but the fire is contained by a fire break, Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.
Four fire engines, a ladder truck and fire fighters with other equipment responded to the blaze off of Buford Highway and Garnett Street near the Brickton Station subdivision around 12:45 p.m. Saturday, according to Rutledge.
No injuries were reported, and no structures were burned.
Georgia Forestry officials were called to the scene to create the fire break, Rutledge said. They used a tractor to cut a path through brush to help contain the fire, he said.
Firefighters remained on the scene throughout Saturday afternoon fighting hot spots and continued checking the site Sunday.
