The Brookhaven City Council unanimously approved a referendum on a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax during its meeting July 12. The decision allows the city to authorize an intergovernmental agreement to distribute funds from the tax proceeds as agreed by the city council.

The council also decided unanimously to defer the matter of implementing traffic calming measures for Brookhaven Heights to the August 9 council meeting. While the petition documents the needed 66 percent of residents to agree to the traffic calming measures, council member Bates Mattison felt the delay worth having all residents being able to have the time and opportunity to participate in the decision.

“It’s important that everybody’s voice is heard on this issue and I want to take the time to make sure that happens,” Mattison said. “I do want to be transparent about this. Hopefully, in the next two weeks, the group can make recommendations to move forward with.”
