An 11-year-old Newton County student has been charged with indecent exposure and other offenses after he allegedly exposed himself to two girls on a school bus Wednesday morning.

The 5th grader at Flint Hill Elementary School in Oxford faces additional charges for allegedly sending a text message to one of the girls that contained a photo of his genitals, authorities said. The youth was not identified because he is a minor.

The Newton County Sheriff's Office was called to the school after the two girls told school officials about the incident on the bus, Deputy Cortney Morrison told the AJC on Thursday. During an investigation, authorities learned about the text message the boy allegedly sent on April 20.

Three other elementary-school age girls saw the cellphone photo, Morrison said. The boy also will be charged with electronically furnishing obscene material to minors.

The boy sent the photos using his personal cell phone that his parents had given him, the sheriff's deputy said.

A juvenile complaint has been filed against the youth, and he was released to the custody of his parents, Morrison said. She said the school was taking disciplinary action against the student.

Newton School officials could not be reached for comment Thursday.
