A South Carolina teen is recovering after she was seriously injured on Christmas Day in Bartow County when a boulder fell on her, officials said.

Brianne Griffith, 15, was playing on a rock formation with other children behind her grandparents’ house in White when the boulder broke loose and fell on her, Bartow emergency medical spokesman Brad Cothran said.

The boulder weighed about 1,500 pounds, Cothran told Channel 2 Action News.

“It just started giving way,” Cothran said. “It was a good size boulder.”

Griffith was in stable condition Tuesday after surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital, Channel 2 reported.

Emergency workers responded shortly after noon, and it took six of them working with a pulley system to move the rock off the girl, Cothran said.

She sustained a possible fractured pelvis and possible fractured leg, he said.

“The chances of her bleeding out were extremely high,” Cothran said.

Given the amount of blood loss, officials decided to fly Griffith to Grady, a Level 1 trauma center.
