A Carroll County judge denied bond Tuesday afternoon for the man accused of killing his son-in-law while other family members were out of town.

"Yes sir, I kinda guess that," Clyde Henry Puckett, 67, told Judge Alton Johnson.

Puckett was charged Monday night in the shooting death of Michael Shane Barber, 40, Capt. Shane Taylor of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office said. Puckett admitted to deputies that he had killed Barber, hours after reporting the death to police, Chief Deputy Brad Robinson said Tuesday.

Puckett allegedly shot Barber multiple times and could face the death penalty, Johnson said.

Barber, a father of two girls, was found in his home on White Oak Court about 7:30 a.m. Monday after Puckett called police. Puckett, who turns 68 later this month, was booked into the Carroll County jail Monday night.

Several solemn family members, including Barber's wife, arrived at the sheriff's office with an attorney around 2 p.m. Tuesday before later sitting in the back row for Puckett's first appearance. Puckett, clad in an orange and white jumpsuit, normally relies on a cane to walk and was brought into the courtroom in a wheelchair, according to a deputy.

As a relative sobbed in the background, Puckett, a former Marine, showed no remorse while listening to Johnson read the charges against him. Puckett told the judge he understood the charges.

A neighbor told Channel 2 Action News that she heard a series of gunshots about 6 p.m. Sunday. But Tuesday afternoon, there was no signs of a crime scene outside Barber's cul-de-sac home, just outside of the Carrollton city limits.

Police had not released a possible motive for the shooting, but neighbors told the Times-Georgian newspaper of Carrollton that the two had a long-running dispute. Family members declined to speak to reporters outside the courthouse.

A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 10.
