Gwinnett County police were working Thursday night to figure out how an SUV wound up overturned in a pond near Norcross — and who the dead person was behind the wheel.

Police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said a person walking near the intersection of Oakbrook Parkway and Indian Trail-Lilburn Road spotted the vehicle Thursday and called police. Authorities responding to the scene discovered a man’s body inside.

The vehicle was upside down in a pond about 20 yards off the roadway, Pihera said. The driver, whose identity was not released, was submerged in the water.

“That’s likely how this person died,” Pihera said.

Few other details were available Thursday night. The vehicle was removed from the water and pulled through a dense wooded area just before 11 p.m.

“We don’t know if it happened today or yesterday or several days ago,” Pihera said.
