Chiemeka "Richard" Ugochukwu, a student at Georgia Perimeter College, has received Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. The Nigerian-born student is one of 60 scholars selected nationwide for the honor.  The scholarship covers most educational costs and living expenses. Awards vary, but students can receive up to $30,000 a year for three years. A native of Nigeria, Ugochukwu was sent to live with family in America in December of 2009 because of his country's political and economic strife. He has a 3.9 grade point average at Georgia Perimeter.

Gwinnett's Parkview High School beat out 11 other Georgia teams to win the state's  2011 National Economics Challenge. The students took a series of tests in microeconomics, macroeconomics and international economics. Team members William Gausphol, Brynna Paulakaitis, Sona Sadselia and Tim Wu were lead by economics teacher Gary Petmecky. Wu had the highest individual score in the competition, earning a 270 out of 300. Parkview's economics students also finished tops in Georgia in the fall and spring Stock Market Game with an ending portfolio value of $276,235.  Team members  Jonathon Benken, Mary Kidane, and Alina Saveli were lead by adviser Mark Leviton. Mountain View High was the statewide runner-up in the fall, with an ending portfolio value of $193,112. Mountain View teacher Scotty McDaniel led the team of Jamie Stuart, Camden Valentine and Lauren May. Parkview High won again in the spring with students Mitchell Reynolds, Robert Romaine and Zachary Yoder. Each team started with a hypothetical $100,000 in common stocks listed on the major exchanges.

Gwinnett Tech student Lauren Groont took first place at the Southeastern American Society of Interiors Design (ASID) Design Excellence Awards in the materials division. Groont's work was chosen from more than 60 entries from students attending primarily four-year colleges. She was the only student in the competition from a two-year school.  Gwinnett Tech student Beth Radke was honored for her achievements as the Diane Coker Scholarship recipient. The scholarship recognizes outstanding students in the kitchen and bath design certificate program.
