Gov. Nathan Deal announced this week that three teachers are winners in round one of the Innovation in Teaching Competition, which rewards those who demonstrate innovative strategies in language arts and math.

The winners are Sarah Welch, who teaches ninth grade literature and composition at Fannin County High School; Charles Trader, who teaches eighth grade math at St. Mary's Middle School in Camden County; and Amanda Cavin, who teaches first grade gifted, math and English language arts at Union Grove Elementary in Henry County.

Winning teachers receive a $2,000 stipend, and their schools get a $5,000 grant.

Deal said classroom teachers have the biggest impact on student learning, and these award winners serve as an example of effective and engaging teachers.
