Three Gwinnett County students earned Georgia's top scores on this year's National French Exam. The national exam assesses proficiency in French. Earning first place on the exam were Melissa Kyelem of Parkview High School and Saritha Mangones of Brookwood High. Earning second place on the exam was Ndeye Mbodji of Collins Hill High School.

Tyler Keegan, a student at Campbell High School in Cobb, will be taking an all-expense paid 10-day trip to France next month, courtesy of the Institut Français and the Foreign Affairs Ministry (Allons en France program). Tyler's essay, written in French, described poverty locally and internationally. The essay also offered solutions to poverty.  "The innovative aspect of Tyler's work embodies perfectly the spirit of France-Atlanta. He is well deserving of this prize," said Pascal Le Deunff, Consul General of France in Atlanta. Runners up in the contest were Nari Lee of Chattahoochee High School and Cristian Escalera of Valdosta High School. They won respectively for their video and comic book projects.

A team of first, second and third graders from Flippen Elementary School in McDonough recently went to Washington, D.C. where they were honored in the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision program, the world’s largest K-12 student science competition. The students won second place in the K-3 category. More than 4,800 teams from across the U.S. and Canada competed in the event, which promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. The students' project, COOL Pads, are shoulder pads that keep players from overheating. The pads analyze changes in body temperature with sensors located in the armpits, chest, helmet and groin area.

South Gwinnett High School rising senior Maria Ogunlusi spent part of her summer at Georgia Southern University taking part in Georgia Girls State, a citizenship training program. Maria and other students recently learned about how American government operates at the local, county, and state level. The program was developed by the American Legion Auxiliary.
