An inmate at the Barrow County jail died Monday after being found "in distress" a day earlier, authorities said.

Barrow County Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Ryan Sears said the inmate, whose identity and sex were not released, was found in distress at about 6:45 a.m. Sunday. On-site medical personnel assessed the inmate and "determined that medical units needed to be called."

Fire officials took the inmate to a local hospital, where the inmate was pronounced dead on Tuesday.

"The Georgia Bureau of Investigatiotn has been notified to conduct an investigation and there is no foul play suspected at this time," Sears said in a news release.

The investigation is ongoing.
