An infant is recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital’s burn unit after being injured in an apartment fire Wednesday, Atlanta Fire Capt. Jolyon Bundrige said.
The incident happened at the Allen Hills Apartments on Allen Temple Court in northwest Atlanta around 3 p.m., Bundrige said.
The infant’s mother was holding the baby while trying to light some incense over a stove top, Bundrige said.
“The pilot light was out,” Bundrige said. “Whatever she was using to light the incense ignited the gas that had built up inside the stove, and it caused a flash fire.”
The explosion blew out the front window of the apartment and burnt the 10-month old's face, arms and side, Bundrige said.
The mother did not report any injuries, but the baby was taken to Grady’s burn unit.
Bundrige did not have an update on the baby's condition Thursday morning.
The incident is being investigated.
