A weekend that started off sunny and mild will conclude with cold weather and maybe some snowflakes.
Friday started out cold but was warming up with lots of sunshine and highs in the mid-60s.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said clouds will increase Saturday afternoon and rain will move in on Sunday.
"The rain will come with a cold front; behind the front the temperature will drop quickly," Nitz said. Sunday's high will be in the low 50s, falling into the low 30s overnight. Chance of rain is 80 percent. Rainfall amounts will total around 1 inch in metro Atlanta, but spots in northwest Georgia could get as much as 3 inches, Nitz said.
"There’s a chance some of the rain will change over to snow Sunday into early Monday, mainly north of Atlanta," Nitz said.
Even if we do get snow, the ground is too warm for any accumulation, Nitz said.
The state DOT has suspended all construction-related lane closures through 10 p.m. on Sunday, but downtown streets will still be jammed this weekend by sports fans headed to football games at Georgia Tech and at the Georgia Dome.
Georgia Tech takes on the Georgia Bulldogs at noon Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium, while the Falcons play the Minnesota Vikings at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Dome.
