Everybody loves Friday, but this week there's another reason to look forward to the last day of the workweek.

The heat advisory for metro Atlanta ended early Thursday, and while highs later in the day are expected to reach the low 90s, an approaching cold front will keep readings in the low to mid-80s on Friday.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton is forecasting a high Friday of only 83 -- 14 degrees below the 97 degrees reported on Wednesday.

While Atlanta's heat advisory expired at 5 a.m. Thursday, an advisory remains in effect through 6 p.m. for the southeast corner of the state, where the National Weather Service said the heat index could reach 107 to 112 degrees.

On Wednesday, Valdosta recorded a high of 102, while the mercury hit 104 in Augusta.

Minton's forecast for metro Atlanta calls for a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening, along with highs around 93 degrees.

The chance of storms increases to 60 percent on Friday, Minton said.

The weekend forecast is for partly cloudy skies, with a 30 percent chance of rain on Saturday, decreasing to 20 percent on Sunday. Weekend highs should be in the mid-80s, Minton said.
