Temperatures in Atlanta hovered in the mid-80s Monday afternoon, several degrees shy of record territory.

The National Weather Service reported 85 degrees at 3 p.m. -- 1 degree cooler than at 2 p.m. and 4 degrees short of the record for April 30.

The record is 89, set in 1942 and equaled in 1987, and Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton is predicting 89 for Monday's high. Atlanta's high Sunday of 87 was just 1 degree shy of the 108-year-old record for the date.

Minton said there's a 10 percent chance of a late-afternoon or evening thunderstorm Monday, but no other rain is expected until Friday.

Highs will be in the mid-80s on Tuesday and Wednesday, and in the low 80s on Thursday, Minton predicted. Overnight lows this week will be in the mid-60s.

Friday will be partly cloudy, with a 20 percent chance of rain and highs again in the low 80s.

Normal high for the first week of May is around 76 degrees, with lows normally in the mid-50s.
