The Tuesday morning commute began dry, but ended wet as rain spread into metro Atlanta from the northwest.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said a small area of heavy rain had moved into Marietta around 6:30 a.m., with a much larger cluster of thunderstorms and rain headed toward Atlanta from the Rome area.

That broader area of rain, with a few embedded thunderstorms, covered most of the metro area by 9 a.m.

The storms were not expected to reach severe levels in metro Atlanta, but the National Weather Service has put the southern half of the state under a slight risk for severe thunderstorms on Tuesday.

In the northwest corner of Georgia, a significant weather advisory for pea-size hail and 40 mph winds was posted for Walker, Dade and Chattooga counties at 6 a.m.

Minton put the chance of rain for metro Atlanta Tuesday at 40 percent, decreasing to 20 percent on Wednesday. Minton's extended forecast calls for dry weather Thursday through Saturday.

Highs this week will be in the low 80s Tuesday and Wednesday, climbing to around 87 by Friday and Saturday. Lows will be in the 60s.
