Atlanta weather | Dry week begins with smog alert
Temperatures will be climbing this week, and should reach the low 90s by Wednesday’s official beginning of summer.
Metro Atlanta was under a “code orange” air quality alert Monday, with no air-cleansing rain in this week’s forecast.
The code orange alert means Monday afternoon’s air quality is expected to be unhealthy for people who are sensitive to ozone, children and people with heart or lung disease.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist David Chandley is forecasting sunny skies straight through Friday, with highs in the mid-80s on Monday, upper 80s on Tuesday and a very summer-like low 90s Wednesday through Friday.
Summer officially begins at 7:09 p.m. Wednesday.
While metro Atlanta was expected to be dry on Monday, the National Weather Service said there is a slight chance of isolated afternoon thunderstorms across extreme northeast Georgia as an upper-level disturbance moves across the Appalachians.
The most likely location for thunderstorms is north and east of a line from Blue Ridge to Homer.
