Atlanta has been awarded an $88,650 grant by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency. The grant, which is federally and state funded, comes from FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, and is intended to enhance the city’s emergency notification system. The system would have the ability to reach Atlanta residents and visitors by landline, cell phone, text message and email. Atlanta secured the grant funds by participating in the Fulton County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan.
The city of Atlanta contributed matching funds of $42,659. The grant includes a federal share of $37,125, with the remainder of the grant coming from the state of Georgia in the amount of $8,865.
“This grant will allow Atlanta to make critical enhancements to our emergency system,” said Mayor Kasim Reed. “Keeping our residents informed during critical events is a key part of my commitment to public safety, and with these additional funds, the city now has a greater capacity to alert and distribute emergency information as quickly as possible, to as many people as possible.”
