Atlanta officers responding to a report of an armed robbery on a Midtown street exchanged gunfire with a suspect late Tuesday night, wounding the man, police said.

A radio call went out about a couple robbed as they were walking at 8th and Myrtle Streets, and responding officers spotted the suspects in a van on Ponce de Leon Avenue near Myrtle, according to Atlanta police Sgt. Curtis Davenport.

The officers stopped the vehicle, and the suspects got out and at least one of them fired a gun at police, Davenport said. The officers returned fire, and one of the suspects was shot and wounded.

The man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Information about his wound and its severity was not immediately available, nor was it clear what happened to the other suspect. No other injuries were reported in the incident.
