An Atlanta police officer was relieved from duty after he was accused of running over a man he mistook for a suspect, officials said.
Warren Hill told Channel 2 Action News the officer, whose name has not been released, ran him over last week in the parking lot of the Mall West End.
"It hurt bad," he told Channel 2. "My head, my neck, my back, my whole body. You get hit by a car, what do you think is going to happen?"
The officer thought Hill was a domestic violence suspect, Hill said.
"I was trying to get away from the cops and I was scared of the cops, so I ran,” Hill said. “So they thought I was the suspect and ran me down like a dog or an animal.”
Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer Stephanie Brown told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution the incident report is not available at this time, but the department has referred the case to its Office of Professional Standards for invesitgation.
“The officer has been relieved from duty pending the outcome of the OPS investigation,” Brown said.
Hill said after police realized they had the wrong guy, they still arrested him after discovering he had an outstanding warrant for a broken taillight and failure to appear in court.
The Atlanta Police Department told Channel 2 more information will be available next week.
