Gas company crews were working Tuesday afternoon to repair the cut gas line that forced the evacuation of two apartment buildings near Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward.

Atlanta fire department spokeswoman Janet Ward confirmed just after 2 p.m. that the gas line had been cut at 525 Glen Iris Drive NE, an address one block south of North Avenue near Historic Fourth Ward Park. The broken line forced the evacuation of two apartment buildings.

The address given matches that of the AMLI Old 4th Ward apartment complex.

Ward said the gas line was hit by a construction company, bringing Atlanta Gas Light to the scene and closing Glen Iris Drive between North and Angier avenues.

Ward confirmed just before 4:30 p.m. that gas service had been cut off to the area and that the buildings were being “aired out.”

Atlanta Gas Light spokeswoman Kristie Benson said crews were still working on repairs.
