An apartment community of 200 units was approved 5-0 Tuesday by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

Pollack Shores Real Estate Group will develop the apartments on nearly 22 acres on the south side of Barrett Parkway, east and west of Barrett Creek Boulevard and south of Barrett Creek Parkway with access on Barrett Creek Boulevard, according to the zoning application.

Commissioner JoAnn Birrell’s request to reduce the units from 219 to 200 and from four stories to three stories received agreement by Pollack Shores’ attorney Garvis Sams.

Leasing costs will be $1,300 per month for the one bedrooms to $2,800 per month for the three bedrooms, Sams said.

Of the units, 45 percent will be one bedrooms, 45 percent will be two bedrooms and 10 percent will be three bedrooms, he added.

In response to Sams’ claim that these apartments would be affordable to millenials with dual incomes and no children, Commissioner Lisa Cupid noted they would need to earn $47,000 a year to afford a one bedroom at $1,300 per month based upon salary guidelines that one-third of salary should pay for monthly rent or mortgage.

Chairman Mike Boyce said he is hopeful more county employees will want to live in Cobb by providing this type of housing.
