Three College Park apartment buildings were destroyed by a fire that took several hours to contain Monday night.

Firefighters from seven departments battled the blaze, which also sparked a grass fire, at the Village of College Park apartments on Herschel Road, Tami Fowler, spokeswoman for the College Park fire department, told the AJC.

The three damaged buildings contained a total of 24 apartments and 53 people were displaced by the blaze, Fowler said late Monday. Red Cross officials were assisting those whose homes were destroyed, she said.

Two people were transported to hospitals Monday evening, Fowler said. A bed-ridden resident was taken to a hospital as a precaution, and another resident complained of chest pains. Several other buildings in the complex were also evacuated as firefighters fought the blaze, which began Monday afternoon.

East Point, Fulton County, Clayton County, Atlanta, Union City and Hapeville firefighters assisted with containing the blaze at the complex, near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Fowler said. The Georgia Forestry Commission extinguished the grass fire, which firefighters believed was sparked from the structure fire.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the blaze.

"We have not been able to get inside yet," Fowler told the AJC at 9 p.m.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the complex overnight.
