Two days after an Atlanta police officer was struck and killed on the interstate last week, another officer survived a close call, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The incident happened on I-285 southbound near Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway while an officer was trying to help a stranded motorist.

Police told Channel 2 that Officer Scott Wallins had to jump onto the concrete median to avoid being hit by a vehicle Thursday. The vehicle rear-ended the officer's patrol car and swung around and hit the stalled driver's car, Sgt. Curtis Davenport said.

In the Jan. 24 incident, Senior Officer Gail Thomas was struck and killed by a suspected drunken driver on the ramp from I-75 southbound at I-85 northbound after pulling over to help with an accident. Thomas' funeral was Monday.

Driver Chasity Jones, 22, of Stone Mountain is being held in the Fulton County Jail without bond on charges including first-degree homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence and reckless driving.

The driver in Thursday's incident was cited with failure to move over, Channel 2 said. In the police report, the driver said she could not get over because of traffic.

Georgia's Move Over law, passed in 2003, requires drivers to slow down and move over one lane for emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the highway, the report said.
