The Alpharetta City Council has approved spending $59,150 to buy 70 patrol rifles for the police department.

The firearms will be purchased from Gulf States Distributors under a state of Georgia contract, according to a staff report to the council.

“The department will purchase 60 Sig Sauer, M400 Pro, 5.56 caliber rifles with 16-inch barrels, and 10 Sig Sauer, M400 SBR, 5.56 rifles with 11-inch barrels,” staff said. “The competitively procured state contract price per rifle is $845.”

Funding for the acquisition will come from federal Drug Enforcement Administration seizures. “Total overall costs will be significantly less than budget estimates ($130,000), which will free up all remaining funds for future public safety initiatives that are allowable under asset forfeiture guidelines,” staff said.
