An alleged church burglar was caught red-handed early Saturday after an alert witness tipped police off to the break-in.

“Early this morning, a citizen observed a male breaking into the Bible Christian Ministry Church on Ormewood Terrace,” Atlanta police spokesman John Chafee said Saturday.

When officers arrived around 12:40 a.m, they located the suspect inside one of the church offices and arrested him.

“Officers found that the suspect had gone through the office desk and removed items from it and had stacked camera equipment on the floor preparing to remove it,” Chafee said.

He said the suspect, whose name has not been released, had in his possession several screw drivers, a wrench and a pair of gloves.

Chafee praised the tipster, who he said saw the suspect pacing back and forth in front of the church before going in the front door.

“Because of this citizen’s quick phone call, officers were able to catch the burglar in the act,” he said.
