The first U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues will serve as the commencement speaker for Agnes Scott College, officials announced Wednesday.
Melanne Verveer will receive an honorary degree from the women's college during the May 14 ceremony on the Decatur campus.
President Obama created Verveer's position in 2009 to lead a new office within the State Department. That office coordinates foreign policy issues that involve the political, economic and social advancement of women.
