African art collection on display in Duluth

William and Susan Rochfort of Fitzgerald with a bronze river oba, (an oba is a diety) from Benin that greets visitors to an exhibit of the Rochfort's collection of African art at The Hudgens Center for the Arts in Duluth.

Susan Rochfort holds a string of amber beads. More than 230 pieces of African art and artifacts from the collection owned by Susan and her husband William are on display in Duluth. The collection features fine bronze castings, elaborate masks, richly woven textiles, intricate adornments such as headdresses and beads and decorated utilitarian objects for everyday use.

The piece in foreground is a ngandusa figure from the Bambara people of Mali. It is carved from one piece of wood and stands seven feet, ten inches tall. Offerings would be placed at the base of the figure to insure fertility and continued lineage.

A ferocious yet elegant bronze lion from Benin cast using the lost wax process guards the entrance to one of the galleries displaying pieces at The Hudgens Center for the Arts in Duluth.
