Adopt-A- Golden Atlanta welcomed more than 300 adopted golden retrievers and their forever families on Oct 23 at The Field at Concourse Office Park at it’s annual fundraiser and celebration, Goldenrama. An “afternoon in the park”, the fundraiser event hosted games such as bobbing for tennis balls, playing musical sit, a costume contest and more.
Along with fun and games, Goldenrama aimed to bring attention to the importance of rescues. “Besides being a typical rescue, Adopt-A-Golden Atlanta specializes in owner turn-ins for families or people who cannot afford to take care of their golden retrievers,” said Juliann Kaiser, director of public relations.
The amount of turn-ins has risen due to the state of the economy, which means a greater need for volunteers. Whether it is fostering, becoming a part of a taxi team to rescue dogs from shelters or performing home visits for adopting families, Adopt-A-Golden Atlanta is run and relies solely on volunteers. “If someone cannot take part in some of the traditional volunteer activities, we always need dog walkers at the pet lodges where the dogs stay,” added Kaiser.
The volunteer-based organization started in 2003 and has grown to become the fourth largest rescue in the country. It saves approximately 400 dogs a year and has saved over 2,500 dogs to date. The nonprofit’s goal is to find 50 golden retrievers a forever home by Christmas.
“These are smart and affectionate dogs and we want to be able to find them all a good home,” said Founder and President Lauren Genkinger. “But most importantly, we want people to know that we are here as resources to help families and their golden retrievers.”
