Actual Factual Georgia

Q: I wonder what happened to former state attorney general candidate Ken Hodges. I remember that Hodges had settled in Atlanta, and I think that was specifically to make a run for that office. Obviously, he did not win, but I wonder if he plans another run for office?

A: Ken Hodges, who was the Democratic nominee for Attorney General of Georgia in 2010, is enjoying his family and new job too much to run for office again anytime soon. "[I] am grateful to the many supporters I had last year and the many new friends I made on the campaign trail across this great state," he told Actual Factual Georgia in an email. "I have stayed involved in the political process and am working with others who seek to be elected." Hodges, who was the District Attorney of the Dougherty Judicial Circuit in his native Albany for 12 years, joined Atlanta firm Ashe Rafuse & Hill in January as a partner in its general litigation division, where he helps "people and businesses solve problems quickly and effectively." He and his wife Melissa have two young children, Margaret and Jack, so when he isn't in a courtroom, Hodges devotes his energy to his family. "One was born in the primary and the other in the general [election] (which clearly proves the political season lasts too long!)," Hodges wrote. "I have been enjoying spending more time with them now that I am off the trail."

Q: Is Joanne Woodward really from Georgia?

A: She was born in Thomasville, a town more synonymous with football than Academy Award-winning actresses. Woodward lived there until the second grade, when her family moved to Marietta. Perhaps knowing she was destined for stardom, Woodward and her mother attended the premiere of "Gone With the Wind" when she was 9 years old in 1939. She reportedly hopped into a limo and sat in the lap of Laurence Olivier, who was escorting Vivien Leigh. Woodward attended Marietta High School, but her family moved to Greenville, S.C., her junior year. By 1958, she had two famous men in her life – an Oscar (for her performance in "The Three Faces of Eve") and a husband named Paul Newman.
