14th Street bridgework shown in time lapse
Midtowners impatient for the 14th Street Bridge to open Thursday can at least satisfy their curiosity now about how it looks.
A Georgia Tech assistant professor and his students have been following the bridge construction project with a camera set on top of the Marriott hotel, and anyone can view the photos on the Web at oxblue.com/pro/open/gatech/14th . Viewers can click a calendar to see how the project looked on any date, from demolition of the old bridge to the emergence of the brand-spanking new one. Or click at the top center of the screen to see it all happen in time lapse.
The professor, Jochen Teizer, is analyzing the construction process with his students for efficiency. The bridge was closed to traffic on May 27, 2008, and is done, but an Interstate ramp and street work are still to be finished. The camera should keep working at least until December, Teizer said.
