The state House has passed and sent to the Senate a bill that would extend for two years an inventory tax exemption given to boat and other watercraft dealers.

These business have had the exemption since Jan. 1, 2009, and the bill extends the break to Dec. 31, 2013, its sponsor, Rep. Mickey Channell (R-Greensboro), told House members before Wednesday afternoon’s vote.

When the exemption was first offered, there were 200 of these businesses in the state, Channell said. About 100 of those have since gone out of business, he said.
