The Senate Finance Committee gave unanimous approval Monday to a bill in support of Gov. Nathan Deal's decision to block an increase in the state gas tax.

The House passed the bill last week, turning it over to the Senate for final approval. With the committee's vote, it now goes to the Senate Rules Committee for another review and possible scheduling this week of a floor vote.

Deal in late June signed an executive order suspending the tax hike, which normally kicks in automatically. The tax, at 20.4 cents per gallon, would have increased 1.6 cents per gallon.

The freeze, which lasts until the end of the year, requires legislative approval.
