Sewell Brumby has spent more than 25 years drafting legislation for Georgia lawmakers. On Thursday, Brumby announced his retirement.

Brumby has been the state's legislative counsel for 26 years, leading the office that writes nearly every piece of legislation that comes before the General Assembly.

The Legislative Services Committee, a joint House-Senate panel that manages the General Assembly's budget, unanimously agreed to elevate Brumby's deputy, Wayne Allen, to the top position. Allen, who made $98,000 as deputy counsel, will be paid $125,000 a year. Brumby retires at a salary of $166,000, according to the most recently available figures.
