The Johns Creek fire chief has stepped down to become the state fire marshal.

Jeff Hogan, who has been chief since 2011, will start the job next month.

Hogan joined the Johns Creek Fire Department in 2008, after decades with the Fulton County Fire Department. In Johns Creek, his work to improve fire protection in the city resulted in him saving residents millions of dollars in insurance premiums.

In his new role, under Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner Jim Beck, Hogan will oversee building and manufactured home inspections, inspections of hazardous material and licensing.

Chris Coons, the city’s assistant fire chief, will serve as interim fire chief while the city looks to fill the position.
