Fulton County commissioners agreed Wednesday to pay $750,000 to the family of a man who died in the Fulton County jail.
The county admits no wrongdoing in agreeing to the settlement, but wants to “avoid the uncertainties and further burdens of litigation,” the document said.
Three jailers — Curtis Jerome Brown, Mitnee Jones and Derontay Anton Langford — were convicted in relation to the 2008 death of Richard Glasco in the jail for various charges including excessive force, obstructing an FBI investigation and lying to a grand jury.
Glasco, who was biploar, was being held at the jail on a disorderly conduct charge. The 42-year-old father of five had been banging on his cell door and yelling for hours, jailers said.
The three jailers entered Glasco’s cell. An inmate from across the hall testified at trial he heard a physical altercation, a scream from Glasco and then silence.
Glasco was found unresponsive and soon pronounced dead.
The jailers cleaned Glasco’s cell, fabricated reports and then lied to FBI agents and the grand jury, Assistant U.S. Attorney Angela Jordan said.
An attorney for Glasco’s family did not return a phone call seeking comment. A Fulton County spokesperson declined further comment.
