A recent spending proposal under consideration by the Republican-led U.S. House would revoke the Obama administration’s $47.6 million grant for an Atlanta streetcar, according to Georgia Department of Transportation officials.

But the Democrat-led Senate opposes revocation, as does the Obama administration, so it is too early to tell whether the proposal has a chance at success, said the DOT’s federal policy and congressional liaison, Dan Gentry.

A $4 million grant to study a high-speed rail line between Atlanta and Charlotte may also be vulnerable, state officials said, stressing however that the proposal was a preliminary one with an uncertain future.

The city of Atlanta won its grant in October to help build a $72 million streetcar line between Centennial Olympic Park and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.
