College and career academies' bill passes House
By Nancy Badertscher
April 12, 2011The Georgia House passed legislation Tuesday that would create a new state office to oversee Georgia’s college and career academies.
The bill passed 163-1 and now goes back to the Senate for final approval.
The academies covered by the legislation are specialized charter schools that partner with business, industry and others on workforce development. Lawmakers were told that there are 23 community-based programs that offer these dual-enrollment courses.
The state Board of Education would still approve the charter, but supervision would be by the Office of College and Career Transitions.
